    Impact of primary and secondary machinery tracks on fine root growth of sugar maple after selection cutting

    Selection cutting, where approximately 30% of the trees are removed every 30 years, is the main silvicultural treatment used in temperate deciduous forests of Quebec (Canada). Concerns have been raised that the use of heavy machinery is creating soil disturbances that are negatively affecting the growth and survival of remaining trees. The aim of the study was to determine if heavy machinery is affecting the growth, morphology, and architecture of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) fine roots in and around machinery tracks left after selection logging. The study site, a sugar maple dominated stand, was located in southern Quebec. Root ingrowth bags and standard root cores were used to compare fine root growth, morphology, and architecture in and around machinery tracks one year after logging. Fine root growth of maple was reduced fivefold in both primary (multiple trip) and secondary (only one trip) machinery tracks compared with the control. There was a nonstatistical reduction in fine root growth within 1 m of the tracks. Because machinery tracks cover between 15% and 25% of a stand after selection logging, such reduction in fine root growth could be significant for the growth and survival of the remaining mature maple trees

    A Multi-objective Exploratory Procedure for Regression Model Selection

    Variable selection is recognized as one of the most critical steps in statistical modeling. The problems encountered in engineering and social sciences are commonly characterized by over-abundance of explanatory variables, non-linearities and unknown interdependencies between the regressors. An added difficulty is that the analysts may have little or no prior knowledge on the relative importance of the variables. To provide a robust method for model selection, this paper introduces the Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm for Variable Selection (MOGA-VS) that provides the user with an optimal set of regression models for a given data-set. The algorithm considers the regression problem as a two objective task, and explores the Pareto-optimal (best subset) models by preferring those models over the other which have less number of regression coefficients and better goodness of fit. The model exploration can be performed based on in-sample or generalization error minimization. The model selection is proposed to be performed in two steps. First, we generate the frontier of Pareto-optimal regression models by eliminating the dominated models without any user intervention. Second, a decision making process is executed which allows the user to choose the most preferred model using visualisations and simple metrics.     The content and context of physicians' communication with males about human papillomavirus vaccination

    A physician's recommendation for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a key predictor of vaccine uptake; however, little is known about how physicians communicate about HPV vaccine with male patients. We sought to describe physicians' HPV vaccine communication practices with males who are of vaccine-eligible age (9-26 years). We surveyed representative samples of pediatric and family medicine physicians in Florida, and assessed whether physicians present HPV vaccine as optional or routine, and as a vaccine that prevents cancer. We also assessed the type of visit during which physicians discuss HPV vaccine with adolescent males and whether other healthcare providers in the practice discuss HPV vaccine or make the initial recommendation. We received 367 completed surveys (50.7% response rate). Few physicians (29.9%) reported they typically present HPV vaccine as routine to males ages 11-12 years, who constitute the target group for routine vaccination. When discussing HPV vaccination, many physicians reported somewhat or strongly emphasizing cancer prevention (80.0%). Physicians most often discussed HPV vaccine when they saw patients for well-child visits (93.0%) and least often at acute care visits (15.3%). Over half reported that at least one other healthcare professional in their practice discusses (56.1%) or makes the initial recommendation for (54.9%) HPV vaccination. Many physicians in our sample are presenting HPV vaccine as optional rather than routine and are missing opportunities to communicate with males about the vaccine. Our findings identify areas for future interventions to improve physicians' HPV vaccine communication and, ultimately, increase the use of this cancer-preventing vaccine

    Employment Expectations and Gross Flows by Type of Work Contract

    There is growing interest in understanding firms’ temporary and permanent employment practices and how institutional changes shape them. Using data on Spanish establishments, we examine: (a) how employers adjust temporary and permanent job and worker flows to prior employment expectations, and (b) how the 1994 and 1997 labour reforms promoting permanent employment affected establishments’ employment practices. Generally, establishments’ prior employment expectations are realized through changes in all job and worker flows. However, establishments uniquely rely on temporary hires as a buffer to confront diminishing long-run employment expectations.     Protein Synthesis by Day 16 Bovine Conceptuses during the Time of Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy

    Interferon Tau (IFNT), the conceptus-derived pregnancy recognition signal in cattle, significantly modifies the transcriptome of the endometrium. However, the endometrium also responds to IFNT-independent conceptus-derived products. The aim of this study was to determine what proteins are produced by the bovine conceptus that may facilitate the pregnancy recognition process in cattle. We analysed by mass spectrometry the proteins present in conceptus-conditioned media (CCM) after 6 h culture of Day 16 bovine conceptuses (n = 8) in SILAC media (arginine- and lysine-depleted media supplemented with heavy isotopes) and the protein content of extracellular vesicles (EVs) isolated from uterine luminal fluid (ULF) of Day 16 pregnant (n = 7) and cyclic (n = 6) cross-bred heifers on day 16. In total, 11,122 proteins were identified in the CCM. Of these, 5.95% (662) had peptides with heavy labelled amino acids, i.e., de novo synthesised by the conceptuses. None of these proteins were detected in the EVs isolated from ULF. Pregnancy-associated glycoprotein 11, Trophoblast Kunitz domain protein 1 and DExD-Box Helicase 39A were de novo produced and present in the CCM from all conceptuses and in previously published CCM data following 6 and 24 h. A total of 463 proteins were present in the CCM from all the conceptuses in the present study, and after 6 and 24 h culture in a previous study, while expression of their transcripts was not detected in endometrium indicating that they are likely conceptus-derived. Of the proteins present in the EVs, 67 were uniquely identified in ULF from pregnant heifers; 35 of these had been previously reported in CCM from Day 16 conceptuses.     A nearby young M dwarf with a wide, possibly planetary-mass companion

    We present the identification of two previously known young objects in the solar neighbourhood as a likely very wide binary. TYC 9486-927-1, an active, rapidly rotating early-M dwarf, and 2MASS J21265040-8140293, a low-gravity L3 dwarf previously identified as candidate members of the \sim45 Myr old Tucana Horologium association (TucHor). An updated proper motion measurement of the L3 secondary, and a detailed analysis of the pair's kinematics in the context of known nearby, young stars, reveals that they share common proper motion and are likely bound. New observations and analyses reveal the primary exhibits Li 6708~\AA~absorption consistent with M dwarfs younger than TucHor but older than the \sim10 Myr TW Hydra association yielding an age range of 10-45 Myr. A revised kinematic analysis suggests the space motions and positions of the pair are closer to, but not entirely in agreement with, the \sim24 Myr old β\beta Pictoris moving group. This revised 10-45 Myr age range yields a mass range of 11.6--15 MJ_J for the secondary. It is thus likely 2MASS J21265040-8140293short is the widest orbit planetary mass object known (>>4500AU) and its estimated mass, age, spectral type, and TeffT_{eff} are similar to the well-studied planet β\beta Pictoris b. Because of their extreme separation and youth, this low-mass pair provide an interesting case study for very wide binary formation and evolution.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Sperm design and variation in the New World blackbirds (Icteridae)

    Post-copulatory sexual selection (PCSS) is thought to be one of the evolutionary forces responsible for the rapid and divergent evolution of sperm design. However, whereas in some taxa particular sperm traits are positively associated with PCSS, in other taxa, these relationships are negative, and the causes of these different patterns across taxa are poorly understood. In a comparative study using New World blackbirds (Icteridae), we tested whether sperm design was influenced by the level of PCSS and found significant positive associations with the level of PCSS for all sperm components but head length. Additionally, whereas the absolute length of sperm components increased, their variation declined with the intensity of PCSS, indicating stabilizing selection around an optimal sperm design. Given the diversity of, and strong selection on, sperm design, it seems likely that sperm phenotype may influence sperm velocity within species. However, in contrast to other recent studies of passerine birds, but consistent with several other studies, we found no significant link between sperm design and velocity, using four different species that vary both in sperm design and PCSS.
